Caption By Hyatt, Kabutocho

Tokyo JPN

At Mitchell & Eades, we are drawn to projects that challenge the conventions of hospitality. Caption by Hyatt in Kabutocho, Tokyo, represents a fresh perspective on what hotels can be: social, welcoming, and deeply connected to neighborhood. It embraces a new type of hospitality. Unpretentious, engaging, and at home with its community. When you walk into a Caption hotel, you feel instantly at ease. It’s the kind of place where you pour yourself a glass of sparkling water, play a board game with friends, or strike up a conversation with the person next to you.

For us, the real luxury lies in freedom: the ability to do what you want, when you want. Caption hotels balance “just enough” service with a lifestyle aesthetic that makes guests feel part of something real. They prioritise authenticity; local furniture makers, sustainable styling, murals by celebrated local artists. They create a powerful connection between the guest and the city they are in.

The design honours Kabutocho’s legacy as the birthplace of Tokyo’s financial district, blending raw timber structures with the bold, functional minimalism of Japanese architecture. Artists Adrian Hogan, Motas, and Shinjiro add layers of energy, curiosity, and playfulness that shift with each space. Guests gravitate to shared spaces, an upright piano, water stations, and convivial dining tables. The chef is a storyteller; passionate about creating menus that evoke nostalgia and connection.

For Mitchell & Eades, Caption by Hyatt is about designing differently: creating spaces that feel alive, open, and ready to be claimed by the people who walk through their doors. This project reaffirms our belief that hospitality, at every level, should always be about people, community, and connection.
